Meals Plus Users Among Top Ten Districts Accepted to Breakfast in the Classroom Program

Congratulations to Charleston County School District (SC) and Guilford County Schools (NC) for being selected to participate in the Breakfast in the Classroom Program. Ten schools were added to the program this school year, which will provide more than 70,000 students free breakfast. Because students that eat breakfast do better in school overall, test higher, are better behaved and less likely to be sick or overweight, awareness to provide healthy breakfasts to the nations children has grown.

The Breakfast in the Classroom program increases participation in schools because of a number of factors. Primarily because students are served in their classroom, so they do not have to be at school significantly earlier. Students that ride the bus, for instance, may not arrive in time to eat and be in class on time. Also the impression that students that eat breakfast at school are low income, prevent many students from eating at school. Because the program is open to all students there is no way to distinguish between student serving statuses.

Congratulations to Charleston County, Guilford County Schools and the other eight school districts that were given the opportunity to participate in such an exciting program!
